Trailblazing partnership with Veolia

1

UK Power Networks Services has been working with resource management company, Veolia, since 2006.

We signed two important contracts with them in 2022/23; one was to support Yeovil District Hospital in its ambition to decarbonise, in line with the Government’s strategy of encouraging hospitals and the NHS in general to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The second was a project to help Veolia introduce electric refuse collection vehicles across Westminster City Council. We have installed 21 charge points to support 40 electric vehicles.

Refuse collection vehicles are prime candidates for electrification as they operate within Central London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) and it is the nature of their use that they stop and start frequently in residential areas.

Electrification will not only reduce emissions and improve air quality, it will also make the vehicles much quieter.

UK Power Networks Services is also installing electric charging infrastructure at Veolia’s depot at Landmann Way Depot, Deptford in South London.

Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg, Cabinet Member for City Management and Air Quality said:

By replacing diesel-powered refuse trucks with a £20m investment in UK-built electric vehicles, Westminster City Council is voting with its fleet. The trailblazing electrification will deliver an essential service that is quieter for residents, improves air quality in central London and reduces our fleet emissions by 50 per cent, or over 2,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. This is a significant moment in the evolution of sustainable council services and we look forward to further expanding our zero-emission vehicle fleet in the future.
